About Us

The present has a past. We bridge what lies between.

Luminrate is an independent publication covering world affairs, geopolitics, economics and history for readers who want to understand more than what happened today. We trace the history, decisions, institutions, interests and ideas behind the stories shaping our world.

Through long-form reporting, original series, archival research and primary sources, Luminrate connects today’s headlines to the forces that produced them — giving important stories the depth, evidence and time they deserve.

Beyond the News Cycle.

Your standard news begins with the event. Luminrate begins earlier.

We believe current events make more sense when the history behind them is treated as part of the story, not as optional background reading. Our mission is to make that context clear, compelling and accessible without reducing complicated subjects to a single angle or a few minutes of attention.

That means asking not only what happened, but what came before it, who shaped it, which institutions mattered, what interests were at work and why the consequences still matter now.

Long-form reporting
In-depth reporting and analysis that follows a subject beyond the headline and gives readers the context needed to understand it.
Original series
Major subjects unfold across structured, multi-part series. Each episode builds on the last, allowing a story to develop across years, borders and turning points rather than being compressed into a single article.
Archives and primary sources
Documents, speeches, maps, photographs and other original material are brought into the reporting wherever they help readers get closer to the evidence.
Film and visual storytelling
Where a subject benefits from it, Luminrate extends its reporting into film and other visual formats, giving the same research a different way to be experienced.

Context before conclusion.
We establish the history and evidence before asking the reader to accept an interpretation.
Sources readers can see.
Readers should know where important claims come from. Sources, archival material, image credits and corrections belong in the publication, not behind it.
Depth without needless complexity.
Serious reporting does not need to be inaccessible. We make difficult subjects understandable without flattening the details that make them important.
Nuance over noise.
We are not built to repeat every development in the daily news cycle. We focus on stories where added context can genuinely change how the present is understood.

Luminrate began with a straightforward frustration: too often, the news tells us what happened while leaving the history that made it possible somewhere outside the story.

We built Luminrate around a different premise. The past is not a footnote to the present. It is part of the reporting.

Our journalism moves between current events and history, reporting and the archive, and individual articles and larger connected series. We want readers to leave with more than an update. We want them to understand how the pieces fit together.

Luminrate covers world affairs, geopolitics, economics and history, with particular attention to the political settlements, institutions, conflicts, ideas and economic forces that continue to influence events today.

Our opening editorial series begin in the Middle East, using historical reporting and primary-source research to examine how the modern region was formed and how those decisions continue to shape the present. As Luminrate grows, the same approach will extend to other regions and subjects.

Luminrate is a publishing home for journalists, researchers, writers and subject-matter experts with something substantive to add.

Contributors keep their byline and their voice. Luminrate provides the editorial structure, production and platform for work that may need more space, research or depth than the daily cycle normally allows. Pitches are reviewed editorially, and publication is based on the strength of the story, the reporting and the evidence behind it.
